Lighting Designer and Technical Coordinator
Overview:
The Baltimore Museum of Arts seeks a creative and organized Lighting Designer and Technical Coordinator to work full time in our Exhibition and Design Department.
From a single object in 1914, The Baltimore Museum of Art’s outstanding collection today encompasses 90,000 works of art, including the largest holding of works by Henri Matisse in the world, as well as masterpieces by Pablo Picasso, Paul Cézanne, and Vincent van Gogh.
The BMA is recognized for an impressive collection of contemporary art that includes important examples of Abstract Expressionism, Minimalist sculpture, and Pop Art with many late works by Andy Warhol, as well as major acquisitions of more recent work by artists such as Olafur Eliasson and Kara Walker. The Museum also boasts an internationally renowned collection of prints, drawings, and photographs from the 15th century to the present; European masterpieces by Sandro Botticelli, Rembrandt van Rijn, and Sir Anthony van Dyck; distinguished American painting, sculpture, and decorative arts; one of the most important African collections in the country; and notable examples of art from the Ancient Americas, Asia, and the Pacific Islands.
Responsibilities:
This position is responsible for all aspects of design, installation, and ongoing maintenance of the BMA’s collection and exhibition lighting. This includes digital and audio/visual works of art. S/he must have a working knowledge of exhibit lighting fixtures and lamps, wiring, and basic electrical formulas. The candidate must be able to read exhibit plans and design lighting plots for a variety of collection gallery spaces and temporary exhibitions. S/he maintains lamp and fixture inventory and is responsible for annual lighting budget.
S/he must have working knowledge of conservation standards for works of art and be familiar with light measurement equipment. This position works in coordination with the installation team and is required to fulfill general art handling duties as necessary. Must work in tandem with the Museum’s Master Electrician and adhere to strict electrical and fire codes.
Qualifications:
- Preferred Bachelor’s degree in art related field.
- Minimum of 2 years experience in a Museum or related institution in art handling.
- Minimum of 2 years experience in the lighting and audio/visual media field.
- Employee must be able to carry up to 50 pounds, work safely on ladders, drive hydraulic lifts, and perform duties at heights over 25 feet.
